ABSTRACT:
The integration of pharmacology into surgical materials represents a transformative advancement in modern medicine. Drug-eluting sutures, stents, and implants combine structural support with targeted pharmacological action, reducing complications such as infection, restenosis, and implant rejection. This pharmaco-surgical synergy optimizes post-operative outcomes, minimizes systemic drug exposure, and accelerates patient recovery. This review explores the evolution, mechanisms, and clinical applications of drug-eluting surgical devices, with emphasis on antimicrobial sutures, bioresorbable stents, and implantable drug reservoirs. Future directions include nanotechnology-enabled coatings, smart-release biomaterials, and personalized drug-device integration, positioning drug-eluting surgical adjuncts as a cornerstone of precision surgery.
